Empowering Special Needs Students: The Impact of Tailored Child Counselling Programmes
How Our Specialised Support System Helps in Challenges Faced by Special Needs Students
In their early years, children with special needs may face various challenges such as:
- Communication Difficulties: Some children struggle with expressing themselves or understanding others.
- Social Isolation: They may face difficulty forming friendships and engaging in social interactions.
- Academic Struggles: They may have unique learning challenges that require tailored teaching methods.
- Behavioural Issues: Some children will also experience behavioural and emotional regulation difficulties.
At the Integrated International School, we are dedicated to providing an enriching educational experience that accommodates students with a diverse range of learning disabilities. To do so, we provide students with tailored and individualised learning approaches, activities and also a variety of programmes to address their specific learning challenges. Here are some of the support options:
Additional Learning Support
Additional Learning Support (ALS) aids students in achieving success at school and beyond. The expert learning support team identifies students struggling early on and then intervene, scaffold, and modify lessons, helping students before their learning gap grows detrimentally. Our individualised approach helps identify necessary interventions and can resolve academic, behavioural, developmental and/or socio-emotional difficulties.
Behavioural Therapy and Modification Techniques
Together, our experienced teachers, psychologists and therapists in Singapore implement a range of empirically sound methods rather than just one set approach. This detailed strategy ensures we foster a positive relationship between our students and support school specialists, which ultimately leads to effective intervention outcomes. This involves some of the following behavioural and support measures:
- Naturalistic Behaviour Intervention / NBI
- TEAACH
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Crisis Prevention Intervention
- Sensory Breaks
Occupational Therapy
We also offer Occupational Therapy (OT) services to help children develop their sensory, physical and fine motor skills. These abilities strengthen children’s movement patterns, muscle tone, body-form-spatial perception, motor planning skills, and play skills and assist with processing sensory information. Additionally, OT helps with self-regulation to improve attention and impulsivity.
Personalised Counselling Approaches
Through either individual or group counselling, our professional support staff encourages students to discuss anything that’s on their mind. These counselling sessions help children identify their emotions and provide them with the tools to handle stress, build a sense of self-awareness, utilise mindfulness techniques, and develop problem-solving skills. Taking an integrated approach to counselling, our support school offers a range of therapeutic methods such as:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Play Therapy
- Expressive Therapies (i.e., art therapy, psychodrama, etc.)
- Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
- Growth Mindset
Our services also include play therapy which helps children to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe and non-judgmental environment. It provides them with a safe and natural outlet to express themselves through play, allowing them to develop a sense of control and work through difficult situations. You can read more here about play therapy and other forms of therapy we offer here.
Experienced Educators & Support Staff
In addition to customised special needs programmes, our dedicated and highly experienced support team have the experience and skillset to assist students with a range of learning disorders including autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. IIS has a zero-tolerance policy against mistreatment or bullying of students, with the aim to foster a genuinely caring community at our private special needs international school in Singapore.
If any student is struggling academically, behaviourally, emotionally or socially, our teachers are highly trained to identify when a child needs additional support. Our high teacher-to-student ratio (1:6) allows teachers to prepare and apply the appropriate action needed to support our kids. Teachers can immediately reassess if the learning or behavioural strategies are effective, if not, they will communicate with our support staff and work together on a new tailored programme. For example, if a student has ADHD or Dyslexia, they may develop a loss of confidence or anxiety over school work. Therefore, our teachers will coordinate with support staff to address these areas and create effective learning programmes while monitoring any changes in development of the students.
Our in-house counsellors and therapists work together with our teachers daily to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Alongside our team’s vast experience working with students who have learning difficulties, we are also committed to providing parents with detailed advice on effectively communicating with their children.
A Safe & Nurturing Learning Environment For Your Child
